Luigi Bechini has been surrounded by books for most of his life. His mother was a bookseller, he worked in a bookshop when he was younger, and he remains an avid reader today. So perhaps it’s fitting that, as Marketing Manager of Geca, Luigi spends his working life helping other people put books into the world. He has a particular affection for independent publishers, whom he calls “dreamers” driven by idealism and passion despite operating in an extraordinarily difficult market. “They love what they do,” he says.
At Geca, that feeling is mutual.
Independent publishers face low margins, distribution channels largely controlled by major publishing groups, and the challenge of making an individual title visible among a sea of books. Geca tries to help publishers manage those realities in practical ways, particularly by producing short runs at viable unit costs with fast turnaround. But the relationship can extend beyond manufacturing. Geca takes a consultative approach to choices such as papers and cover embellishments, helping smaller publishers create books that can attract attention when they reach a bookstore shelf.
Digital printing has fundamentally changed what’s possible. Luigi says more than 80,000 new titles are published in Italy each year, while average print runs have declined. Interestingly, he sees the next opportunity for digital as helping publishers focus more deeply on fewer titles and giving those books longer lives. Instead of committing to large quantities and warehousing inventory, publishers can replenish a title frequently in very small runs. That can free them to put more time, energy and money into promoting the book itself. As Luigi puts it, a publisher’s catalog is “real wealth.” Keeping those titles economically available helps preserve that value.
Geca itself has been navigating change. Following its acquisition by Circa Spa, Geca became the dedicated book division within a larger organization. Rather than erase what had already worked, Luigi says the new ownership deliberately protected it: the people, production processes and customer relationships remained intact, and a dedicated book-production space was created at the new headquarters. That continuity has also allowed Geca to preserve the distinctive identity and voice it built with publishers.
Luigi says virtually everyone in Geca’s book division — from production and customer service to sales — genuinely cares about books. Visitors can see the pride production employees take in the finished work. Marketing simply makes that affection visible, while communicating Geca’s respect for the people who write, edit, design, and publish the books entrusted to its care.
Luigi thinks about the work in unusually expansive terms. For centuries, books have carried knowledge, scientific discovery, stories and insights about what it means to be human from one person and generation to another.
Geca may operate in a modern production environment powered partly by digital technology, but Luigi sees the company as participating in that much longer story. “Books are something that really matters to our lives,” he says.
