For Kunal Chandaria, traveling from Kenya to Edge Slovenia was already paying off before the event ended. The founder and managing director of DPI Holdings had spent several days meeting fellow print leaders, exchanging ideas and getting answers to challenges back home. “I've already solved about three or four problems these last three days,” he tells Dscoop storyteller Darin Painter during a lively conversation alongside Veronicah Wambui Mburu, DPI's chief sales, marketing and innovations manager. Their discussion offeres a window into a company determined to keep evolving — and a reminder that some of the most valuable discoveries at Edge happen through conversations with people who understand your business.
That determination to innovate was born partly from difficult experience. Kunal recalls the challenges of building DPI and realizing that standing apart from competitors was essential to its future. “With the power of digital, you can do so much. It's so exciting,” he said. Today, customers in Kenya are requesting more product variations, smaller quantities and faster delivery, creating opportunities for digital packaging specialists willing to adapt . Veronicah explained that DPI's ability to deliver short runs, variable data and consistent quality is important, but so are the relationships behind every order. The company's sales team has grown from about two people to nine, with each salesperson developing close connections with customers. That personal attention, she believes, is a major reason customers return.
At Edge Slovenia, the two leaders were also thinking about DPI's next opportunities. Kunal describes reconnecting with a fellow Dscooper who had been interested in flexible packaging, an area DPI already serves. That peer suggested DPI could expand into folding cartons using existing equipment with additional finishing capabilities. The conversation opened up a potential new direction, although Kunal emphasizes that investment decisions must be carefully weighed. He plans to involve Veronicah and the sales team in evaluating whether customers would embrace the offering. AI is another area he's exploring, potentially with outside expertise. His approach combines an appetite for experimentation with a practical understanding that new capabilities need a viable market.
The value of Edge became even more concrete when Kunal described solving a production challenge involving DPI's JetFX embellishment equipment. He wanted to achieve both matte and gloss effects on labels and had been struggling to determine the right process. A conversation with an industry contact at the event revealed a straightforward approach involving DPI's existing laminator. Kunal also used Edge to evaluate HP PrintOS capabilities, discussing the potential investment with Veronicah before deciding to move forward.
For Veronicah, attending her first Dscoop event was equally revealing. She discovered how printers operating similar equipment in different countries encounter many of the same problems — and how freely they share solutions.
Those experiences explain why Kunal keeps traveling to Dscoop events and encouraging his team to learn beyond the walls of their own business . He recalled a candid conversation with other members about DPI's margins that gave him a fresh perspective on his company's performance. Veronicah valued hearing how peers were improving their systems and responding to familiar challenges. Both returned repeatedly to the idea that learning from others can prevent expensive mistakes and reveal opportunities that might otherwise remain hidden.
As Kunal put it, “Knowledge is power.” For DPI, that knowledge is helping turn curiosity, relationships and new ideas into the next chapter of growth.
