Thumbs Up for Thunder Print
A memorable visit to an impressive print services provider in Malaysia.

My recent trip to Thunder Print in Sungai Petani, Malaysia, was nothing short of incredible!
Located about 4-5 hours from Kuala Lumpur, Thunder Print is the largest PSP I’ve visited so far, and it left a profound impression on me. Spanning an impressive area of 330,000 square feet, the sheer size and scale of the operation were astounding.
I had the privilege of a personal tour led by Mr. Ch’ng Chuwn Leong, the CEO of Thunder Print, who greeted me and my colleagues from HP, along with several other customers, with great hospitality. Joining me on this tour was a company from Hanoi, which brought along their designer, finance officer, pre-press and post-press staff, sales team, and even the owner's son. It was inspiring to see such a diverse group of professionals come together to learn from Thunder Print's success.
One of the things that stood out to me was the strong bond Mr. Ch’ng has with his team. Prior to this visit, I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Ch’ng and his team at Drupa in Düsseldorf, Germany. What amazed me was that he flew in a team of eight members to attend the event. This is a rare sight for an Asian company, and it demonstrated the CEO's deep respect for his employees and his commitment to their growth and development.
During our conversation, Mr. Ch’ng shared his belief in continuous growth and transformation. "When we change presses, we also need to grow our team for the better," he said. Thunder Print has invested heavily in team-building activities over the past year, taking the entire staff on trips to Taiwan and Seoul, Korea. In just two weeks, 44 employees will be heading to China for their next team-building experience. "You need to value the employees," he emphasized. His focus on employee well-being and development is undoubtedly a key factor in the company's success.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Thunder Print’s work culture is their application of the Kaizen method, a Japanese philosophy that focuses on "continual improvement."
Mr. Ch’ng explained that the goal is to create a culture where all employees are actively engaged in improving the company through small but consistent changes. “Big results come from many small changes accumulated over time,” he shared.
As part of this philosophy, Thunder Print has a Wall of Appreciation, where employees are recognized for their contributions. Categories such as "Best Kaizen," "Best Productivity," "Best Quality," and "Best 6S" (which stands for Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain, Safety) highlight the company's focus on both individual and team achievements.
This recognition system fosters a sense of pride and motivation among employees, aligning everyone with the company's goal of continuous improvement.
As I toured the facility, I discovered several interesting and thoughtful spaces designed for the employees. Thunder Print boasts a multi-purpose hall that feels like a cinema, where everyone can relax and enjoy free-flowing beer at the end of the week.
Right across from the main facility, Thunder Print has built a sports center that includes a badminton court, gymnasium, and even a dance room, all dedicated to the well-being of the employees. Within the facility itself, there is a pool table area, which has become so popular that people sometimes need to book the room after office hours.
To top it off, there’s a cozy café/restaurant located both inside and beside the sports center, offering a convenient spot for employees to unwind.
The team at Thunder Print is diverse, with employees from various countries such as Vietnam, Bangladesh, Nepal, China, Malaysia and India. Mr. Ch’ng emphasized how important harmony is within the company, and it was evident that this sense of unity and mutual respect runs deep within the organization.
One of the standout individuals I met during my visit was Ms. Teoh, who has been with Thunder Print for an impressive 26 years. Now heading the sales department, Ms. Teoh embodies dedication and loyalty. "We’ve grown together with the company. It’s not just a job; it’s a family," she shared, reflecting the supportive and inclusive culture that has been fostered at Thunder Print.

I also spoke with Shelvin, who shared her personal reflections on her father, the CEO. She expressed admiration for his leadership and his commitment to the team. "My father has always believed in growing the business together with the people. He is not just a boss but a mentor to many," she said, offering a touching perspective on Mr. Ch’ng’s role as both a leader and a mentor.
Overall, my visit to Thunder Print was an eye-opening and inspiring experience. The company’s success is clearly driven by its strong leadership, its dedication to continuous improvement, and its genuine appreciation for its diverse and hardworking team. I look forward to seeing how Thunder Print continues to innovate and set new benchmarks in the printing industry.
