For many print service providers, sustainability is no longer a question of why â it's a question of where to start. Customer expectations are increasing, regulations are becoming more complex, and businesses are looking for practical ways to make progress while creating value for their organizations. Yet for many companies, the biggest challenge is simply understanding their current position and identifying the right next step.
To help address this challenge, we launched the Sustainability Peer Group in collaboration with the  HP Sustainability Amplifier program , bringing together companies to learn from one another, share experiences, and turn sustainability insights into tangible actions. The common starting point for the participants was the HP Sustainability Amplifier Self-Assessment. By completing the assessment, companies gain visibility into their current sustainability maturity, identify opportunities for improvement, and received tailored recommendations to guide their next steps.
âThe self-assessment results were very helpful, and they certainly highlighted areas where we have room to grow," said Paul Manganiello, cross marketing specialist at The QMC Group. "I suppose that is exactly why we are participating. You have to start somewhereâ
For many participants, this initial clarity provided a foundation for deeper discussion within the Peer Group. Once companies understood where they stood, they could learn from the experiences of others facing similar challenges and discover practical ideas they could apply within their own organizations.
The Amplifier itself provides us with invaluable information on how we are doing in terms of sustainability, as well as guidance and actions that help us set priorities and facilitate growth.
For CEO Jack Glacken and his team at TGI, that combination of assessment, guidance and ongoing peer engagement proved invaluable. âHPâs Sustainability Amplifier program has been a fantastic way for us to kick off our sustainability journey," he said. "It all started this past November in Milan, Italy at Dscoopâs sustainability conference and has continued every month with our international peer group. Itâs been a game changer for us."
Jackâs experience reflects one of the most powerful aspects of the initiative: Sustainability can often feel overwhelming at the beginning, but learning alongside peers helps organizations gain confidence, accelerate learning, and avoid having to navigate the journey alone.
The sessions also demonstrated the value of practical collaboration. Participants regularly shared tools, processes, lessons learned, and best practices that others could adapt within their own organizations. From customer communications and sustainability reporting to data collection and employee engagement, the discussions focused on real challenges and actionable solutions.
âAt Precision Proco, we're thrilled to take part in the Sustainability Amplifier Program," said Rachel Cooper, the company's environmental professional. "The Amplifier itself provides us with invaluable information on how we are doing in terms of sustainability, as well as guidance and actions that help us set priorities and facilitate growth. The community itself is also incredibly useful; the Sustainability Peer Group is a great way to share knowledge and expertise and tackle common issues together.â
Her experience reinforces one of the key takeaways from the program: While every companyâs sustainability journey is unique, many of the challenges are shared. Learning from others can help organizations move faster, gain confidence, and avoid starting from scratch.
Whether you're just beginning your sustainability journey or looking to build momentum, understanding where you are today is often the most important first step.
