In the first session of a three-part series on the business side of color management, Jason Tempestini, CTO of Rods and Cones, provides a foundation for understanding how color management plays a pivotal role in client retention.
Jason emphasizes that color management is more than just a technical process; it’s a business strategy that directly impacts the bottom line.
“Color management became a tool that I used to make more money,” he says, illustrating how consistent color reproduction can improve client satisfaction and build long-term relationships.
By ensuring accurate and repeatable color results, printers can maintain a “common appearance across the entire spectrum” of different print methods and position themselves as trusted partners to their clients, he says. Clients value the ability to have cohesive campaigns that look consistent, regardless of the medium.
Jason also stresses the importance of continuous measurement and tracking of color to ensure ongoing accuracy. “When it comes to the day-to-day reality of making money with color in this industry, these days we’re going to need a system,” he explains, advocating for tools like spectrophotometers to regularly monitor color accuracy. Without such systems, even the best printers can face inconsistency due to the inevitable aging of equipment and consumables.
This session underscores that effective color management isn’t just about technical precision — it’s also about delivering on client expectations, maintaining consistency and enhancing profitability.
The next session in this series will dive deeper into the practical aspects of applying these principles on HP Indigo platforms.
