How HP’s Sustainability Amplifier Program Works
SUMMARY
A growing number of print service providers are trying to move beyond vague sustainability goals, and HP’s Sustainability Amplifier Program is giving them the tools, data and support to do it.
TRANSCRIPT
Sustainability can feel complicated for busy print providers. Regulations are evolving. Customer expectations are rising. And many printers want to improve, but don’t know where to begin.
During the Global Online Sustainability Summit, HP’s Carlos Lahoz walked attendees through a practical, accessible way forward: the HP Sustainability Amplifier Program, a free initiative already guiding hundreds of PSPs toward measurable sustainability improvements.
Built directly inside HP PrintOS, the Sustainability Amplifier Program helps printers benchmark their current efforts, identify opportunities and take action using structured tools, expert guidance and newly expanded support resources. More than 700 PSPs have already joined, and about one-third have moved beyond assessment into active implementation.
### What the Program Is, and Why It Matters
Carlos emphasized that sustainability is no longer just about reducing waste or energy consumption. Print businesses are increasingly expected to document progress, demonstrate transparency and, in many cases, show social impact. Customers are asking sharper questions. Brands want suppliers who can help them hit ESG targets. And government regulations are accelerating the shift.
The Sustainability Amplifier Program helps PSPs keep pace by offering:
1. A Free, Comprehensive Self-Assessment
Participants begin by completing a structured, confidential assessment that measures:
- Materials and waste management
- Energy and emissions
- Circularity practices
- Labor and social responsibility
- Governance and policy alignment
The assessment gives printers clarity on where they stand today, and it establishes a baseline for improvement.
2. Tailored, Actionable Recommendations
Based on assessment results, the system provides specific next steps. These include:
- Operational changes that reduce waste or energy
- Recommended training
- Technical settings or workflows that improve efficiency
- Sustainability reporting guidance
- Suggested certifications or programs that align with the printer’s maturity level
These insights make sustainability less overwhelming and more achievable.
3. Tools, Training and Support
Through PrintOS, printers gain access to:
- How-to guides
- Video training
- HP sustainability specifications
- Product impact data
- Tools that help measure consumables, efficiency and environmental footprint
How the Self-Assessment Tool Works
Carlos walked attendees through the newly refreshed tool, built around a clean, intuitive interface designed to make the process simple and stress-free.
The tool features:
- A progress bar that tracks completion in real time
- Three maturity levels that clearly show where a business stands
- Customized content that adapts based on printer size, equipment and market focus
- Instant improvement paths, automatically populated after completion
The redesign makes the assessment more accessible even for teams without sustainability expertise. And because it is built into PrintOS, PSPs can return anytime to update their status, close gaps and track new improvements.
PSPs Are Already Seeing Value
Carlos highlighted several examples of printers using the program to make real progress:
- A large Latin American PSP used the program to identify energy-reduction opportunities and justify new efficiency investments.
- A European label converter used HP badges and reporting tools to strengthen sustainability positioning in RFPs, leading directly to new customer wins.
- A fast-growing commercial printer used the assessment to structure its first internal sustainability roadmap, aligning cross-department priorities for the first time.
How to Join the Program
Any PrintOS user can get started easily by logging into PrintOS and selecting the Sustainability Amplifier module. The assessment takes only about 10 minutes, and the recommendations follow immediately.
“You don’t have to know everything to begin. Just start," Carlos said. "The program will guide you.”
