For many leaders, culture is something that's talked about after the work is done. Erin Meyer suggests the opposite.

At Edge Slovenia, the bestselling author and renowned professor argues that culture is the operating system behind every decision an organization makes — and one of the biggest drivers of innovation, flexibility, and long-term success.

To illustrate the point, Erin explores the evolution of Netflix, a company that has repeatedly reinvented itself as its market changes. While many organizations respond to growth by adding more rules, more approvals, and more layers of management, Netflix takes a different path. As she explains, its leaders intentionally build an environment where talented people are trusted to make good decisions without waiting for permission.

That approach begins with what Netflix calls talent density — surrounding employees with high-performing colleagues who demonstrate the right skills, judgment, and collaborative mindset. It also depends on creating a culture where candid feedback is welcomed rather than avoided. Together, those principles reduce the need for bureaucracy while encouraging employees to take ownership of their work.

Erin also challenges leaders to rethink how they lead. Instead of relying primarily on oversight, she encourages organizations to provide employees with the context they need to make smart decisions on their own. As she puts it, "Lead with context, not control." When people understand the company's priorities, customers, and strategy, they're better equipped to solve problems quickly and confidently.

Another message resonates throughout the keynote: great cultures don't emerge by accident. They are built intentionally through hiring, communication, and everyday leadership decisions. "Don't seek to please your boss; seek to do what's right for the company," Erin says, describing the mindset organizations should encourage if they want employees to think like owners instead of simply following instructions.

For print leaders navigating AI, automation, and rapid market change, her message feels especially timely. Technology continues to transform the industry, but competitive advantage still comes from people — how they're developed, how they're trusted, and how confidently they can make decisions when circumstances change. Culture, Erin reminds the audience, isn't separate from innovation.

It's what makes innovation possible.
